ANANTNAG, Sep 9: A cop was killed while two others were wounded when militants attacked a police party in southern Anantnag town Saturday.
The attack took place a day before the home minister Raj Nath Singh, who is on four day visit to the state, is scheduled to visit Anantnag Kashmir where he will be holding meeting with the top officers of security agencies to take stock of the security situation in south Kashmir.
Official sources said that the militants opened fire on a police party near General Bus stand Anantnag and fled from the spot. In the attack, they said, three cops sustained injuries and were immediately evacuated to district hospital Anantnag. One of the cops who had received critical injuries, however, was declared dead by the doctors on arrival to the hospital.
The deceased cop was identified as CT Imtiyaz Ahmad of Palpora Noorbagh Srinagar while as the injured cop was identified as Shabir Ahmad.
A doctor at DH Anantnag said that the cop was brought dead to the hospital. "He had been hit by bullets in head while as another cop had received bullet injuries in his wrist. The injured cop was discharged after the treatment," the doctor said.
The firing, locals said, created panic in both the new and old bus stand markets with people running for their lives. "As soon as the firing started shopkeepers downed their shutters and many vendors abandoned their stalls and ran for safety," said a local, Yasir.
Locals said that the policemen also resorted to aerial firing while taking their injured colleagues to hospital to clear the room for their vehicles, thus creating panic in other market places as well.
