Train services resume in Kashmir
KT NEWS SERVICE
SRINAGAR, Sep 9: Train service resumed this morning after remaining suspended yesterday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where separatist had called for protests after Friday prayers against ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state of Myanmar.

“We have resumed train service on all routes in the Kashmir valley though there was some problem in the signal system,” a railway official said.

He said train service resumed on Srinagar-Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north this morning after remaining closed yesterday.

Trains service also resumed on Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region, he said.

However, he said due to some problem in signal system, trains were delayed in the morning.

The official said train service was suspended following directive from the state administration and police for security reasons. There was threat to railway property and passengers, he said.

The train service has become very popular among the passengers, particularly daily travellers and those travelling from Jammu to Srinagar, who prefer boarding train from Banihal. The service is considered safe, fast and cheap.

In the past railways suffered heavy damage to property, including stations and tracks due to violence.

Last year the train service remained suspended for about six months due to summer unrest in the valley.
