SRINAGAR, Aug 11: Joint protest on the call of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) was held in Maisuma area here today.
Carrying placards which reads “Oh UN why you silent on Kashmir situation and we want freedom” dozens of JKLF, Hurriyat (M) and Hurriyat (G) leaders and activists assembled at Maisuma and staged demonstrations to protest attempts to abrogate Article 35-A and detention of separatist leaders by NIA.
Chanting slogans in favour of freedom and against India, the protesters marched towards Budshah Chowk and held sit-in against what they termed atrocities meted out to Kashmiris on daily basis.
Talking to media, senior JKLF leader, Sheikh Rashid said that the present government surrendered special powers conferred to the state to remain in power.
“During 2014 elections they promised that they will not let BJP to enter Kashmir if they win, but the moment they won their preferred BJP as their partner and then surrendered special powers to New Delhi to remain in power,” added Rashid.
He said that killings and arrests has become routine in Kashmir with international community maintaining criminal silence over the atrocities meted out to suppressed Kashmiri people.
He also said that raids on the residences of senior separatist leaders who spent half of their life in prisons within and outside state is aimed at maligning the ongoing freedom movement.
“We would like to make it clear that these leaders spent half of their life in prison, raids and arrest by NIA and ED is mere harassment. Their aim is to malign the movement and leaders as well,” he said.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted between police and youth at volatile Nowhatta area in old city in which a dozen people sustained injuries
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the Chairman of his faction Hurriyat Conference (M), was not allowed to deliver Friday sermon at historic Jamia Masjid as he continues to be under house detention at his Nageen residence here.
