ANANTNAG, Aug 9: Clashes broke out between forces and youth during a cordon and search operation in volatile Quimoh township of southern Kulgam district on Wednesday. Following the clashes, the security forces called off the operation.
A joint team of army and special operations group (SOG) of police at around 4 pm laid a seize around the hospital and Muqdampora localities after receiving input about the presence of militants in the area. According to local sources, as the security forces advanced for searches, groups of youth in an attempt to disrupt the operation hit the streets and clashed with forces. The youth, they said, resorted to intense stone hurling at the forces. The forces in retaliation lobbed tear-smoke shells and fired warning shots in air to drive away the youth who refused to relent till the search operation was over. Though, the local sources said that the security forces called off the operation following the intense stone pelting protests, police officials said that the search operation was conducted in the entire area despite stone pelting.
"We had information about presence of militants in a particular locality and the entire locality was searched. However operation was called off after there was no contact with the militants. There was no question of ending the operation of due to stone pelting," a police official said.
