Prayers at Jamia Masjid after 6 consecutive Fridays

No restrictions in Old city parts

SRINAGAR, Aug 4: After a continued clampdown imposed by the state authorities for past six consecutive weeks, the Friday congregational prayers were allowed in historic Jamia Masjid here in Nawhatta area of Srinagar.
While the authorities did not impose any restrictions in the old Srinagar after six weeks, the Nawhatta area also remained without any restrictions.
Friday congregational prayers were held in Jamia Masjid after remaining barred for past six Fridays. A large number of people participated in congregational Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid.
For past six Fridays the Jamia Masjid has remained locked while the area would remain under curfew like restrictions to prevent people from entering the mosque.
The government authorities today allowed opening the lock of all gates of Jamia Masjd after remaining closed for six consecutive Fridays.
The continued lockdown of the Jamia Masjid had evoked widespread anger and anguish from religious and social and political circles in valley. Protests were also staged several times to decry the Jamia Masjid siege.
Moreover, it was after six Fridays the markets in the vicinity of the mosque remained open as no curbs were put into place by the authorities in old city.
All shops and other business establishments remained open in all areas of old Srinagar on Fridays no restrictions were imposed by the authorities after around seven weeks.
For past six Fridays the authorities have been imposing curfew like restrictions in old Srinagar areas including Nawhatta locality.
The continued siege around the area in Nawhatta locality was lifted on Friday by the authorities while there were no restrictions towards the pedestrian and vehicular movement.
Meanwhile, restrictions were lifted from all areas of old city on Friday as people resumed normal work since early Friday morning.
Several areas along old Srinagar have been remaining under curfew and curbs while normal life has remained paralyzed for past six consecutive Friday with the curfew like restrictions being imposed by the government authorities.
According to the state officials the steps would be taken to ensure the maintenance of law and order situation across the areas and to quell any protests, clashes in these areas.
