SRINAGAR, June 14: ‘Syed Ali Shah Geelani blood bank’ was inaugurated today with an announcement that another such blood bank will be setup in Pakistan administered Kashmir (PAK) also.
Hundreds of people from different walks of life donated blood on the occasion and Geelani also tried to donate. However, doctors did not allow him to donate blood because of his ill health.
Geelani announced that while the blood bank has been setup to meet the freedom struggle related requirements but it will be used to serve the humanity in all respects. On political front he appealed Tehreek-i-Taliban in Pakistan not to carry out attacks in Pakistan saying those are un-Islamic. However, he justified Taliban fighting against NATO forces in Afghanistan saying that they are doing so to end the foreign occupation there.
The announcement for the inauguration of the blood bank was made last week by Hurriyat conference (G) with a plea to the people to come to Geelani’s residence in large number to donate the blood.
Subsequently, people in large number visited the residence of Hurriyat (G) chairman to donate blood. Interestingly, Geelani continued to be under house arrest today also with police laying a siege around his residence at Hyderpora. However, the cops did not stop people going there to donate blood.
The state government had disallowed a seminar by Geelani’s Tehreek-e-Hurriyat on Sunday at his residence.
Addressing the people today Hurriyat (G) chairman said setting up of the blood bank is the need of the hour. He added that his faction wanted to do it earlier but could not do so because of the state suppression. “During the freedom struggle as witnessed in past also the injured need immediate blood whenever there is firing by police and Indian forces on people. Due to large number of injured persons the hospital authorities find it difficult to arrange the blood. During such a situation even people are not allowed to move out of their houses to donate blood,” Geelani said.
He added that with sufficient blood in the blood bank such a crisis can be resolved to some extent. “The blood will be also provided to the patients admitted in hospitals during normal times or during tense situations. Sometimes it happens that the attendants of the patients are unable to arrange the blood, this puts the life of a patient in danger. We want to meet this challenge also,” Hurriyat (G) chairman said.
He said that the blood bank services will be utilized for humanity irrespective of their regional and religious backgrounds. “Service to mankind being symbolic for Muslim Ummah, these services to needy will be provided on humanitarian grounds,” Geelani said.
