Water level in Jehlum receding, say officials

Met predicts improvement in weather from Monday

SRINAGAR, Apr 23: As the weather across Kashmir valley showed some improvement on Sunday, the water level in river Jehlum was receding according to the officials.
The officials in Irrigation and Flood Control Department Kashmir revealed that the level of water in Jehlum at Ram Munshi Bagh here in Srinagar recorded on Sunday evening was 15 feet which was over one feet less than the level recorded on Saturday.
The officials said the level of water recorded in Jehlum at Sangam in south Kashmir was 11 feet depicting that river Jehlum was flowing several feet below danger level compared to previous 24 hours.
With the intermittent rainfall in the past few days, there was an abrupt rise in water level of rivers, streams and lakes particularly Dal Lake, creating panic of flood threat among people.
While the level of water in Dal Lake continued to remain high, decrease in river Jehlum was recorded.
The officials in I & FC department revealed that the level of water recorded in Jehlum at Ram Munshi Bagh was 16.30 feet on Saturday. They said that the level recorded at Sangam in south Kashmir was 15.25 feet while Jehlum was flowing at 11.41 feet at Asham in North Kashmir.
A senior official said that the department was vigilant and alert to deal with the developing situation. He said, however, there was no threat as weather had improved.
"There is nothing to panic about. Today a decrease was recorded in water levels in river Jehlum with the improvement in weather conditions. The water level has receded since this morning and we hope it recedes more in next 24 hours. Moreover, the department is alert and we are keeping watch over the situation. We request the people living near river banks and Lakes, to remain alert," an official at I & FC department revealed.
On Saturday the department had issued advisory and asked the people residing in low lying areas to stay viligilant owing to increase in water levels.
Meanwhile an improvement in weather condition was witnessed in kashmir on Sunday bringing a respite across valley.
The officials at local meteorological department said the weather was likely to show more improvement from Monday. They said, there were predictions of light to moderate rain/thunder showers across Kashmir during next 24 hours.
"We are expecting dry weather in Kashmir from Monday evening. During next 24 hours there is possibility of light to moderate rain/thunder showers across Kashmir valley however the quantity of rain will be less compared to past two days. From Monday the weather is likely to improve more," the spokesperson at Met office revealed.
