MUMBAI, Feb 24: Matt Renshaw's family has not taken Allan Border's criticism (on batsman seeking a toilet-break midway in the first innings in the ongoing Test match against India at Pune on Thursday) seriously.
"We are not surprised given that Border is famous for the Dean Jones incident in India also", Ian Renshaw, the father of the 21-year-old Australian left-handed opener said exclusively.
On India tour in 1986, Dean Jones fell ill due to the hot weather (40 degrees C with 80% humidity) in Chennai tied Test He wanted to go off but when he was batting on 170 runs, this is what Border had told to Jones : "You weak Victorian. I want a tough Australian out there. I want a Queenslander". Jones had no choice but to carry on. .
"I have never met Border in 10 years. If happen to meet him, would say nothing but I would be more interested his brain about playing spin", the senior Renshaw said.
"May be ask him (Border) what would happen for an umpire if the emergency like this arises. What have people done in the past when this happens, or is there something you can do to prevent it ? May be in future he (Matt) must take Imodium before he goes to bat. Imodium is what they gave him to stop the diarrhea".
In fact, the father was told (by this reporter) the incident which the English umpire Dickie Bird had also confirmed. Bird had to leave for a toilet break in middle of the match. Apparently, Bird had informed the captain Ian Botham then..
According to senior Renshaw, his son was not the first batsman to leave field for the same reason. "Former Australian opener Ed Cowan will confirm about the incident when KP (Kevin Pietersen), during one of the Test match in Sydney had left the bat and gloves on the field and straight went to the toilet. The match was stopped for about three minutes".
"May be the umpires would not have allowed this to happen on Thursday. We want the game to move forward and I guess the danger is that it creates possible abuses. But a common sense solution suggested by Allan Border on Friday morning to have a 5-minute emergency break is welcome", the father further added.
"I did have a chat with my son after the game and we just asked him how he was and whether he was ok after the match", the dad signed off.
