Geelani seeks political prisoner status for Kashmiris in jails
YUSRA HUSSAIN
SRINAGAR, June 12: Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), today strongly demanded the political prisoner status for all Kashmiris lodged in jails in connection with Kashmir issue..

The demand was made by him during a meeting with a team of ICRC which visited his residence here. During the meeting Geelani told them that “Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed area and declared a conflict zone at International level.” In view of this “special status” all the Kashmiris lodged in jails in connection with Kashmir issue be given the status of political prisoners. They should be treated as per International laws and given a fair treatment,” the Hurriyat (G) chairman said.

He added that the code of conduct laid by India for its prisoners lays stress for more fair treatment to political prisoners than others in the jail. There is no scope for any kind of excesses and atrocities on the prisoners. The jail manual also insists better food and medical facilities for the prisoners, Geelani stated.

Hurriyat (G) chairman alleged that contrary to these rules the Kashmiri prisoners are ill -treated in jails and they are the victims of vengeance. “The condition of prisoners in jails in Jammu and outside is more pathetic. The prisoners are subjected to worst kind of suppression due to the state policy. The prisoners are being beaten, kept in isolated cells, provided sub standard food and not given medical treatment. Even the tall claims by director general (DG) prisons to provide better facilities to prisoners proved a hoax,” he said.

Geelani appreciated the role of ICRC and urged it to take notice of the inhuman treatment being meted out to the prisoners. He appealed the human rights group to keep on regularly visiting the jails.
