SRINAGAR May 7: With mercury level rising, summer has made its presence felt in Kashmir again.
The maximum temperature was 31.5 degree Celsius today, while the minimum temperature was 14.4 degree Celsius.
Because of the increasing temperature, the movement of the people during late afternoon hours may get affected to some extent in days to come. “Going by the practice in past, the elderly persons may avoid moving outside in afternoon due to hot weather,” said Mohammad Iqbal a shopkeeper.
He added that in summer the customers usually prefer morning and evening hours for shopping. “The number of customers drops down during afternoon hours due to hot weather conditions,” Iqbal said.
Even the tourists who are here since last week see a mark difference in weather now. “Last week it appeared as if it was winter in Kashmir due to rains and light snowfall in upper reaches. We had to buy woolen clothes and jackets here before leaving for Gulmarg and Pahalgam,” said Ramesh Kumar, a tourist from Punjab.
He stated that he and his family enjoyed the cold weather in Kashmir. “We heaved a sigh of relief after reaching here as the soaring mercury level back home had created problems. But now with the temperature also increasing here we get a feel of home here,” Ramesh said.
Another tourist, Mohammad Irfan of Gujarat, said he is not afraid of the increasing temperature in Kashmir. “I know usually the maximum temperature in valley does not cross the 38 degree Celsius mark, while in Gujarat we experience the temperature in 40s,” he added.
Kashmir has been witnessing significant tourist arrival for last several days. This is for the first time this year that the visitors are reaching here in such a big number. There are reports of shortage of accommodation for tourists at health resorts.
