SRINAGAR, June 2: Senior separatist leader and president of Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) Shabir Ahmad Shah today ruled out leaving Hurriyat Conference (M) and said he will continue there and work in accordance with its constitution.
He was reacting to a recent remark by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman Hurriyat (M) that the former can leave the faction if he wishes to.
“Hurriyat Conference is not the private property of any person. It is the custodian of the sacrifices of people particularly those who laid down their lives for the freedom. Nobody has a right to tell other person to leave,” said Shah.
He added that Hurriyat was not formed for playing power politics. “Hurriyat is not like the coalition government in which one partner can ask the other to leave because of the disliking factor. We have to behave responsibly and remove this misgiving that Hurriyat is our fiefdom,”Shah said, whose democratic Freedom Party (DFP) is a constituent of Hurriyat (M).
Mirwaiz had made the remark after Shah directed his party leader, Mehmood Ahmad Sagar, to resign as the convener of Hurriyat (M) in Pakistan administered Kashmir (PAK).
Shah said he will continue maintaining distance Hurriyat (M) leadership as a mark of protest till they do not mend their ways. “There is no question of leaving Hurriyat. I will continue pro-freedom activities as per our constitution,” he said
DFP president expressed displeasure over Hurriyat (M) not establishing its democratic setup and not working as per the constitutional requirements. He stated that after his arrest the efforts for unity between two factions of Hurriyat and the process for reorganization of the faction stopped.
“The democratic setup in Hurriyat is yet to be established. The freedom related work is not being done as per the constitutional requirements. I made efforts for uniting two factions of Hurriyat. But the leadership did not respond to my efforts after my release in 2001 for making Hurriyat (M) effective and valley wide movement,”he said..
Shah reiterated that Hurriyat Conference is a source for taking the ongoing movement to its logical conclusion. “Hurriyat is not itself an aim, our aim is freedom, “DFP president said. He advocated sticking to the Hurriyat constitution to safeguard the sacrifices, offered by the people for the movement. “A solution is possible either through implementation of UN resolution or tripartite talks between India, Pakistan and pro-freedom leadership in Kashmir,” Shah said.
Mirwaiz had accused Shah of not attending Hurriyat meetings and presenting his views there. “He is going to media for making news,” Hurriyat (M) chairman had alleged.
Shah strongly reacted to the remark. “I have raised these issues a number of times in Hurriyat meetings. But no attention was paid. I am not fond of going to media and making news. But making people aware about developments is also important. I cannot act like a spectator,” he said.
