DMU engine catches fire in Udhampur

JAMMU, June 1: In another incident of its kind, an engine coach of Diesel Locomotive Unit (DMU) caught fire under mysterious circumstances on the outer junction of Udhampur Railway Station, this morning.
The DMU engine coach was parked on the jacks in the outer junction of Udhampur Railway Station for further shifting it to Kashmir valley. Fire broke out in the said coach at 6.45 AM under mysterious circumstances as there was no chance of any short circuit or any other technical fault.
The said DMU engine coach was part of the coaches which were being shifted to valley in phased manner.
The fire in engine coach was seen by a passerby who informed local villagers and Railway authorities. The Railway authorities immediately rushed to the spot and sounded Fire & Emergency Services department.
A fire tender was rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after hectic efforts. The Railway authorities have initiated a probe while police has registered a case in this connection. The FSL teams have lifted from the trains to know the reason behind the blaze and police will gear up investigations if any sabotage is detected.
Close on the heels of similar incident in which fire broke out in Shalimar Express and Sawraz Express at Jammu Railway Station under suspicious circumstances on Sunday. Initial incident of fire was reported in one of the railway bogies of the Superfast train (Sawraz Express) in the first half of the day and then two bogies of the Shalimar Express caught fire mysteriously while the train was stationed in the washing line of the Jammu Railway Station.
In both the fire incidents, no one was injured. However, mysterious fire delayed departure of the trains by over one hour. Immediately, after learning about the fire incident in the railway bogies the jawans of the Government Railway Police of the state police led by SP (Railway) Shiv Kumar Sharma swung into action and cordoned off the area to prevent assembly of onlookers near the washing line.
The fire was then brought under control by the fire bridage authorities.
Next day addressing media persons, Superintendent of Police (SP) Railways Shiv Kumar Sharma asserted that SIT comprising of two officers to the rank of Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs), two SHOs and Inspectors have been constituted to ascertain reasons behind the blaze inside six coaches of two trains at Jammu Railway station of Sunday.
Sharma said, similar incident in which coaches of two trains Himgiri Express and Jehlum took place in similar fashion on Sunday in 2011 at washing line of Jammu Railway Station and then FIR number 3 of 2011 was registered which is still under investigation. The Sunday’s incident on May 26 was replica of the incident which took place in 2011 and there are chances of some anti social elements in both these incidents.
