JU Inter-college tourney: Walkovers dominate opening day of badminton

JAMMU, Sep 10: Walkovers dominated the inaugural day of the annual inter-college (men and women) badminton tournament, organised by the Department of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu at Gymnasium Hall on the campus, here today.
In men section, out of eight scheduled matches only two could be played while five others ended in walkovers. Similar was the story in women’s event which again witnessed only three matches as against 10 scheduled for the first day today.
However, MAM College and New Age College won their respective matches in men section while GGM Science College, MIET and Government SPMR College of Commerce registered wins in women’s event.
Earlier, the competition was declared open by Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau. Among others present were Narayani Jamwal, Malik Ajaz, Romesh Sharma, Dr. Sonam Angchok, Sanjeev Jamwal, Dr. Brij Baloria, Raj Kumar, PD Singh and Jai Bharat.

MEN: New Age College beat SVNS Degree College, Kathua 3-0: Ankit Sharma bt Mohinder Singh 21-08, 21-12; Dheeraj Sharma bt Narinder Sharma 21-19, 21-15; Mithilesh bt Rohit 21-10, 21-12.
MAM College bt GCET Jammu 3-2: Ashwani bt Kanav 24-22, 20-22, 21-11; Deepak lost to Anit 10-21, 16-21; Deepak and Ashwani lost to Anit and Kanav 16-21, 16-21; Nihal bt Mohit 21-16, 21-18; Arun and Ashwani bt Sahil and Arjun 21-15, 21-11.
Walkovers: MIET got walkover GDC Bhaderwah; GDC Udhampur got walkover SRS Degree College; GDC Mendhar got walkover GDC Akhoor; GDC Rajouri got walkover RK Degree College; GDC Reasi got walkover GDC Thanamandi.
WOMEN: SPMR College of Commerce beat GCET 2-0: Prabhjyot Kour bt Kamkshi 21-02, 21-02; Prabhjyot and Moukshi bt Parul and Shagun 21-04, 21-13.
MIET beat GDC Hiranagar 2–0: Dikshi bt Priyanka 21-05, 21-02; Dikshi and Sanchi bt Bhanumati and Bhavana 21-08, 21-06.
GGM Science College beat GWC Udhampur 2–1: Sandeep Kour lost to Naphia Akhtar 21-17, 19-21, 13-21; Heena and Veedushi bt Twinkle and Pooja 21–19, 21-19; Heena bt Daisy 21-11, 21-07.
Walkovers: Trikuta Degree College got walkover GDC Billawar; New Age College got walkover ASCOMS; GDC Reasi got walkover GDC Paloura; MBS got walkover GDC Samba; PG Departments got walkover GDC Kathua. Five other colleges of GDC Rajouri, GDC Akhnoor, SVNS Degree College and SRS Degree College failed to turn up for the competition.
