3 killed in Nowgam

SRINAGAR, Jul 5 : Army claimed to have killed three militants in an encounter at Mankal forests in Nowgam of Baramulla district.
Giving details about the incident, defence spokesman, Lt. Col J S Brar, said based on a specific information about presence of militants in the area of Mankal forest, a joint operation was launched by the army and police last evening.
“A contact was established with the militants this morning and in the ensuing encounter, three unidentified militants, likely to be foreigners, have been killed. The identity of the slain militants is being ascertained. Search operations are in progress,” he said.
The spokesman added that three AK rifles, a pistol, a Under Barrel Grenade Launcher, Rs 20,000 in cash in Indian currency, two compasses, a Global Positioning System, a radio set, a mobile phone, map sheets and a large quantity of ammunition including grenades, have been recovered.
Some reports said security forced helicopters in the operation against militants.
Two security men were injured in a separate encounter at Rajwar area. The operation was in progress when the reports last came in.
