SRINAGAR, May 7: Police burst smoke shells and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse daily wagers of various departments, who were demanding regularization of their services here today.
Large number of daily wagers working with different government departments had assembled today here at Pratap Park, Lal Chowk in Srinagar. The massive protest was organized against government’s delay in regularization of services of employees working on daily basis.
The protest was led by the president daily wagers forum Sajjad Ahmad Parray.
Daily wagers had assembled under the banner of J&K daily wagers forum. With placards in their hands the employees were chanting anti government slogans while trying to march towards the civil secretariat.
While the protesters tried to come out of the park police used tear gas shells and canon charge to disperse them. Dozens of protesters were detained by police.
The tear gas shelling and canon charging resulted in a chaos at busy residency road at city centre here. Moreover, the vehicular movement across the business hub was also halted for quite some time.
Protesters alleged that the government was not serious towards paying any heed to their grievances. They said they will continue their endeavour till justice is delivered.
“The successive governments have been neglecting our grievances despite repeated requests and appeals. Previous government indeed created obstacles in the regularization process. Even though the regularization policy has been drafted yet they are not implementing it permanently with the result we have been left to suffer. We expected that this government will at least consider our genuine demands but looks like they too are not bothered at all,” the protesters said.
“The authorities are ignoring our long pending demands. Families of thousands of daily wagers are suffering miserably due to government apathy. Around 7000 families are living in a pathetic condition because of unnecessary delay in regularizing their services. What are they supposed to do,” Sajad Ahmad Parray said.
While condemning the use of force by police to disperse them, protesters said, “Instead of entertaining our demands and easing our miseries they are dealing us with the brute action. If we raise our voice in favour of our genuine rights we are beaten to pulp and detained. However we will continue our fight for our rights till they do not regularize the casual and daily workers without any further delay.”
