6 bodies recovered, 10 missing as flood threat plays havoc with normal life

SRINAGAR, Mar 30: Sixteen members of two families were buried alive when residential houses collapsed after hit by landslides at Laden, Kralgund area in Chadoora last night. Six bodies were recovered and 10 persons are still lying under debris.
The deceased include four women, a man and a child. They were identified as Naseema, Shugufta daughters of Ghulam Nabi, Rukhsana wife of Mohammad Shaban, Mohammad Shaban son of Lal Din Chopan, Mohammad Aslam son of Mohammad Shaban Chopan and Shamema daughter of Lal Din Chopan.
Reports said the village is a landslide prone area and land slides had started hitting the area for last some days. Deputy commissioner Budgam said he visited the affected area on Saturday and the authorities rescued 16 families. Thirteen families were provided tent accommodation and three others government accommodation at safer places.
However, the deceased and missing members of the two families were living in their houses. Fearing trouble one family shifted from their house to another house. The landslides hit five houses including the two, where the family members were staying. Because of the landslides the houses collapsed. All the sixteen persons were buried under the debris.
The people in the neighboiuring areas rushed towards the spot. They were joined by police, army and other rescue teams. Senior police and civil administration officials also reached the spot. Six bodies including that of two sisters and a couple and their son were recovered from the debris. The operation was going on. The authorities said the 10 missing persons are feared dead.
Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has expressed grief over the mishap. In his message, the chief minister, while condoling the unfortunate deaths, sanctioned ex gratia relief in favour of the next of kin of those who died in the collapse. He directed the rescue team at the spot to make all out efforts to rescue the remaining trapped persons from under the debris.
Mufti expressed sympathies with the bereaved families in their hour of distress and prayed for peace to the departed souls.
Minister for agriculture, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjoora today visited the landslide hit villages of Loolipora, Laden and other effected villages of Chrar-i- Sharief constituency.
The Minister was accompanied by the district development commissioner Budgam, SSP. Budgam and other officers.
The minister visited Laden village where six persons of two families have died and several others are missing after landslides hit their residential houses.
Minister expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic incident and expressed his sympathies with the villagers and only member who survived among the two victim families.
The minister, at the site of mishap, instructed for expediting the search for survivors by clearance of the debris that has been started after the incident. Four Bulldozer machines have been pressed in service for clearance of the debris from the site and six bodies have been recovered so far, while search for the missing persons is going on.
Later the minister conducted tour of Loolipora, Laden, Gogjipathri, Siram, Khan Mohalla, Makhdoom Mohalla, Nelanag and other affected areas and took stock of the damages to the roads, buildings and livestock caused due to the incessant rains.
The Minister asked the local administration to provide sufficient number of tents to the affected villagers. He also asked for shifting of the affected families to the safer places and instructed the Ex-Engineer (R&B) to expedite the road restoration work, an official spokesman said.
