Police officer shot dead in Pulwama

Shutdown observed as cops pick up 2 vendors
SRINAGAR, May 10: A police officer was shot dead allegedly by the suspected militants in Pulwama today. After the incident police arrested 2 vendors for questioning after which a complete shutdown was observed in the town.
Hizbul Mujahideen spokesman Baleeg-u-Din told local news agencies on phone that his organization killed the cop.
Reports and officials said that the unidentified gunmen fired upon an assistant sub-inspector rank police officer near Shaheed Park Pulwama.
The police officer was immediately taken to district hospital Pulwama where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. “Two pistol borne persons came and fired upon the police officer from a point blank range while he was discharging his duties in the town,” a police official said.
The deceased has been identified as Farooq Ahmad Shiekh, son of Ali Mohammad Shiekh, belt No. 79/PL.
After the shootout, police arrested a fruit vendor for questioning. It was near his (vendor’s) stall that the police officer was fired upon. However the shopkeepers staged protest against the arrest of the vendor and observed a shutdown. The protesting youth also resorted to stone pelting at vehicles leading to complete shutdown in the township.
SSP Pulwama, Amit Kumar confirming the killing of a police officer in shoot out said, “Two pistol borne militants came and fired upon a police official from point blank range killing him on spot. After the incident two persons were picked for questioning and were released later on. No arrests have been made so far in connection with the incident.”
He said that they have registered a case and initiated investigations into the shootout.
