Massive protests in Delhi over Sajjan's acquittal

New Delhi, May 5: Several Sikh activists on Sunday clashed with police personnel as their protest march to the residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh against the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar was broken.
The protesting activists, primarily from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made attempts to break some police barricades. Though water cannons were in place, the Delhi Police exercised restraint and refrained from taking any such action against the protestors.
The protests were organised at Jantar Mantar as well as on the route to the Prime Minister's residence. The protestors demanded an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the allegations against Sajjan Kumar with regard to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.
There were attempts by the police to negotiate with the protestors but they were unable to make any headway. The angry protestors resorted to sloganeering and tried to break several barricades, refusing to budge from their demand of meeting the Prime Minister.
