SRINAGAR, June 30: Chief minister Omar Abdullah has said the situation after the fire at Dastgeer Sahab (RA) shrine compelled his government to impose restrictions in some parts of the city. Omar said he apologized for the inconvenience to the people.
"I make no apologies for the administrative measures used over the last few days in a handful of police stations. Situation demanded it," Omar posted on the social networking site Twitter.
Chief minister said that many people would have tried to exploit the loss of the shrine to the inferno. "Unfortunately there are people completely devoid of any scruples who would exploit the recent tragedy and that could not be allowed,” he said.
Omar said the people targeting him for the restrictions wanted to create a 2010 like situation. "So while I have no hesitation in apologizing to people inconvenienced by the restrictions, we did what we had to do to keep the peace," he wrote.
"And if you want to see examples of people who would rather have seen blood spill on the streets, take a look at my time-line," chief minister added.
