Road accidents claim 15 human lives in a month

SRINAGAR, May 26: Accidents continue to claim lives in Kashmir each day. Over 15 people lost their lives in road mishaps across Kashmir during the past one month. Eighty people received injures in road accidents.
On May 22, a one year old baby died after being hit by a tipper at Nowgam. In another incident, 45 year old man died after being hit by a bus.
Two people died and our others were injured on May 4. Traffic constable Abdul Rashid resident of Tral succumbed to his injuries after being hit by vehicle at Sanat Nagar.
On the same day Sumo hit and injured a pedestrian at Sumbal, Bandipora. She was shifted to hospital for treatment where she succumbed to her injuries.
On May 14 one person died while four persons were injured in different road accidents across the Valley. A school bus hit and injured two boys at Chittipora, Handwara.
On April 29, a lady died while five others got injured in different road accidents.
The accidents are reported from all parts of the Valley.
From January till March 2014, 80 people got injured in accidents while killing 20.
During the inaugural function of Road Safety Week this year, traffic department stated 688 persons had died in road accidents in past two years in Kashmir.
Ninety five percent accidents occur due to ruthless driving.
In the year 2013, 1905 road accidents had been occurred. The number of people killed in 2013 was 304. During the same year, 2594 people got injured in road mishaps.
Similarly in 2012, 2356 accidents were reported in Kashmir valley. At least 384 people lost lives and 3533 people got hurt in fatal accidents.
In one of the deadliest accidents this year, 30 people died and 14 got injured in a road accident along Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on May 20.
Despite increase in accidents, there is no control on rash driving. No speed limit is followed in city or highway. The presence of traffic cops is meager.
