SRINAGAR, Mar 21: Director General of Police (DGP), Ashok Prasad today ruled out any security lapses in the militant attacks and said that the recent incident at Bemina and today Gulshanagar took place due to the preoccupation of police with some other issues.
The top cop also maintained that the situation was not alarming but threat is definitely there.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a function in Anantnag, DGP, said, “There are no security lapses associated with the recent militant attacks. The incidents took place as the police was preoccupied with some other things. It was only due to our pre-occupation we were unable to avert such attacks.”
On whether the couple of attacks in a just a week’s time was an alarming sign, DGP said, “I do not think anybody needs to get alarmed.
A couple of incidents is not an alarming sign at all but threat is definitely there. However, we should not over-react to the situation as that is not a productive thing. We react on the basis of specific inputs only and we have the other criteria of ensuring zero collateral damage.”
DGP, however, said that the militancy has not gone yet but was on decline.
“The militancy has not gone but is certainly on the lower side. As compared to last year the number of incidents is less. Though we have had a series of incidents this year too but that I already said took place due to the preoccupation of police with other things.”
Admitting that the militants are adopting new strategy of shoot and run, DGP said, “It is true that they are adopting all the new strategies but we will also come up with new counter strategies soon to foil their plans.”
On the house detention of pro-freedom leaders, DGP said that they will be released at the appropriate time. “Yes they are under house arrest and will be released as the situation improves an at the appropriate time,” DGP said.
He said police was investigating the killing of Sopore youth, by the unidentified gunmen yesterday. “We are investigating the incident and will soon be able to solve the case,” the top cop said.
On the news reports in a national daily about the number of Fidayeen in valley being 14, DGP said, “We do not have any such information. We have killed two Fidayeen and arrested two more persons in connection with the case. Further investigation is on.”
