Wani reviews pace of work on 4th Tawi Bridge

‘Increasingly mobile population need better road network’

JAMMU, Feb 7: Describing bridges and better roads as highly significant for maintaining smooth movement of ever increasing mobile population and transport in the State, Minister for R&B and Mechanical Engineering Abdul Majid Wani today said that the government had taken up construction of several major and minor bridges in hand to up-grade the road connectivity in the state–a perquisite for socio- economic development flow.
The Minister on Thursday took on the spot review and inspection of the progress and pace of work on the 750mtr 4th Tawi Bridge at Bhagwati Nagar- Balicharana. He was accompanied by Commissioner Secretary R&B, Tanveer Jehan, Chief Engineer R&B Tehseen Mustafa, MD JKPCC, I A Hamal and other officers.
Taken up in 2010 at an estimated cost of Rs 147 Cr, the bridge is in its final phase of completion and is expected to be opened for traffic by April this year.
The minister asked the executing agency to simultaneously complete the work on the 930 mtr four lane approach road from Hotel Asia, 700 mtr two lane approach road from Bikram Chowk and 1.4 km four lane approach road from Canal Head, to the bridge.
The R&B Minister said that the bridge, along with its connecting approach roads, would provide smooth entry and exit to people and transport thereby significantly easing the current traffic rush in the city. “It will also enhance connectivity between various points, reduce travel time and improve traffic regulation system,” he added.
Wani also took an on the spot brief about the status of the proposed road to be taken up from bridge site Bhagwati Nagar to the TV tower area.
Later, the minister also inspected the upcoming lawyers’ chamber at High Court Complex Janipur and took stock of the pace and progress of work there.
The Minister was informed that 95 lawyers’ chambers had been completed out of which 34 had already been handed over. The minister directed JKPCC to fast track the completion of the remaining floors so that the whole complex could be handed over at the earliest. The overall cost of the project is Rs 18.50 Cr. Once completed, the complex would have more than 200 chambers for lawyers, a conference hall and other infrastructure.
