SRINAGAR, Jan 22 : Hundreds of protestors today hit roads at Newa Township of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district when a police man allegedly beat up and fired upon a shopkeeper after a minor altercation, reports a local news agency, KNS.
According to eye witnesses, some policemen posted at the 183 batallion CRPF camp at Newa Pulwama, this afternoon dressed in civvies purchased mutton from a local butcher. He, however, refused to pay on the pretext that the mutton was not of good quality. After the policemen refused to buy the meat, the shopkeeper, who also happens to be a local panch had an altercation with the policemen, they added.
“However, later the policeman along with other accomplices returned to the shop along with arms and beat up the meat seller, Abdul Rashid Malik of Ugergund Newa, with gun butts. A round was also fired from the police man’s gun in the ensuing chaos after which the policemen returned to their camp,” said a local shopkeeper wishing anonymity.
Later hundreds of protestors hit the street and blocked the Srinagar-Pulwama road, against the alleged high handedness of the police. Pulwama police later reached the spot and pacified the angry protestors after arresting the erring cop identified as Gulzar Ahmad. The police on the spot also promised the protestors that a case will be filed against the cop.
When contacted, an official at Police station Pulwama confirmed the incident saying the cop was under their custody. However, he said FIR had not been lodged in the case as the police was still investigating the circumstances in which the incident took place.
