JAMMU, Oct 31: Progressive Students (PSA) today held a general body meeting in the University campus on the issue of communalism and how the history of communalism is repeated often in the democratic Republic of India be it 1984 or 1992 or 2002 or 2008.
The general debate held in the meeting was how communalism is used as a tool by the class of politicians to serve their interests and cater to their vote-bank politics. The students majoritarily held that the pogrom was well-planned and organised but it was given a shape of communal riots to disrupt the unity of the people. Many students shared their experiences of their parents ad relatives about how at many places the Hindu neighbours of the Sikh houses came to their rescue during the genocide of 1984. Therefore it was not a Hindu versus Sikh riot but a genocide allegedly planned by the governemnt of the day.
Also it was emphasised that there is a need to vehemently criticise the menace of communalism and silence on such issues in a way or other adds to the strength of the communal agents and agendas. The students also pasted charts carrying slogans criticising communalism and upholding secularism a day before near the Central Library which some communal elements tore in the night.
After the discussion, the students staged symbolic protest demanding that the perpetrators of the pogramme must be punished and the victims must be given justice. That the democratic and secular character of the country should be ensured and the violence on minorities must be stopped.
