Police lathi-charge on taxi operators, drivers

SRINAGAR, Aug 29: Police resorted to mild lathi-charge to disperse a procession of taxi operators at Civil Secretariat here today. A driver was also arrested.
A spokesman of taxi operators said the procession was taken out in support of their demand that the recently introduced radio taxis should not be allowed to move outside Srinagar municipal limits. They were also demanding that the number of the radio taxis should not be increased.
The taxi operators including summon drivers allege that the introduction of radio taxi has posed a big threat to thousands of taxi and sumo drivers in the state.
The taxi operators assembled at Boulevard Road and tried to mover in a procession in their respective vehicles towards Civil Secretariat. But their attempt was foiled by police. However, they managed to reach Municipal Park near Polo View and moves in a procession of vehicles towards Civil Secretariat.
At Civil Secretariat, the police men stopped them. The cops resorted to mild lathi-charge and arrested a driver. The drivers lodged a strong protest against the arrest and later dispersed peacefully.
