It snows a happy new year
SRINAGAR, Dec 31: “Hum Jaantey Hain Ki Log Badaltey Hain

Magar Humne Kabhi Tumhein Unmein Gina Hi Nahi”…….

A very warm welcome to the unchanging guest of Kashmir- Snow. The first snowfall (Nausheen) marks a celebratory culmination of the year-2013. This year’s snowfall promises to be a memorable one.

First, snow fills every Kashmiri’s heart with a sublime joy. And I was no exception either. I woke to the voice of my brother saying “Sheenchuwarayapeumuth” (heavy snowfall). Those words ran a wave of happiness through me. I rushed out of my bed to catch the first glimpse of the falling snow. The snowy vista tempted me to venture outdoors and saunter through the white carpet spread across the wintered blades of grass. I craved to be in the company of friends and fight a Sheeni Jang with them.

Absorbed in these thoughts, my nose pressed firmly against the hazy glass pane. Suddenly , my mother’s voice startled me out of my reverie: “ Why are you standing here like a statue? Have you forgotten you have to prepare for tomorrow’s paper? Go, wash your face without wasting any more time.” I felt deflated and all my happiness vanished in thin air. I rubbed my eyes and looked mournfully at the wall clock. The clock struck nine. I realised how much time I had wasted and rushed towards the washroom. I quickly drank a mug of Noon Chai (salt tea) and went to my room.

Instead of opening my notes, I drew away the curtains and again stared at the snowy environs with a frown on my face. Heaving a deep sigh I leafed through the notes. I could not grasp the content in the notes because my mind was somewhere else.

After 10 minutes I got irritated and thought of taking a break. I opened my laptop and accessed my FB account. My home page was flooded with posts and pictures related to snow and new year. Again it reminded me of the all fun I would have, if I were not doomed to prepare for the examinations. I felt infuriated and was I was about to log out, when all of sudden, a status update from a friend caught my attention. It mentioned the postponement of tomorrow’s examination. Instantly my mood tuned from sad to overjoyed.

I ran outside and jumped on the freshly fallen snow on the pathway. The crunching sound filled my heart with immense delight and snowflakes caressed my face flushed with joy.
