Truck-Sumo head-on collision: 5 killed, 6 injured in Sunderbani accident
7 injured as tempo falls into gorge

SUNDERBANI, Oct 7: Five persons including three women were killed while six others were critically injured in a deadly collision between truck-Sumo late Sunday evening near Balshama, 4 kms from Sunderbani tehsil of Rajouri district.

In yet another mishap in the border district of Rajouri, seven persons were injured when a tempo skidded off the road and rolled down into a gorge.

As per eye-witnesses account, the deadly collision between a truck of Public Works Department (PWD) bearing registration number JK02AB-9726 and a Sumo (JK12-2309) took place at around 8.00 PM.

Police reports said that five persons out of a total eleven persons travelling in Sumo died on the spot while six others sustained critical injuries. Sumo was on its from Jammu to Rajouri when this collision took place. All the passengers in Sumo were returning from Beas. All six critically injured were referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.

As per the eye-witnesses, the collision was so deadly that Sumo got totally mangled in the accident. The locals joined by an NGO `Helpline’ led by its president Moti Ram and vice president Virender Singh assisted the police and other agencies in rescue operation and evacuating the injured to the hospital.

Earlier SHO Police Station Naveen Angral too immediately reached the spot after getting the information about mishap.

The driver of the truck, which was on its way from Rajouri to Jammu, fled from the spot after the mishap and he was absconding till the last reports poured in. After registration of the case, the police started its investigation.

Those died in the accident have been identified as driver of Sumo Purshotam Lal son of Beli Ram resident of Saranoo Potha in Rajouri, Kuldeep Raj son of Tara Chand, his wife Satya Devi, Leela Devi wife of Makhan Lal, Pyari Devi wife of Ajit Kumar, all residents of Nehra, Palma (Rajouri).

Those six critically injured referred to GMC Jammu have been identified as Paras Ram son of Mani Saran, Ankush Kumar son of Anand Kumar, Vandana Devi daughter of Kuldeep Kumar, Sanjana Kumari daughter of Kuldeep Kumar, Raj Kumari wife of Pyara Singh and Madhu Bala daughter of Kailash Chander, all residents of Palma, Rajouri

According to police reports, in yet another mishap in Rajouri district, seven persons sustained injuries as a tempo in which they were traveling skidded off the road and rolled down into a gorge.

The vehicle was on its way to Rajouri when the mishap took place at Narayan area in the district, late this afternoon. The victims were admitted to hospital where their condition was stated to be stable, the police said.
