SRINAGAR, Mar 5: Expressing grave concern over fresh wave of arrests of youth in Kashmir, Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today alleged that this atrocity had become a “corruption industry” with police and security agencies warming their hands.
Mirwaiz Umar also questioned the state government to clear their stand over these arrests or face consequences over it.
“The state government is always giving an impression that state police is for protection of life and property of people. But on ground the force has become a big corruption industry for the government by arresting innocents and later demanding money against their release,” he said, while addressing Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid in old Srinagar.
The Hurriyat (M) chairman alleged that state government is itself responsible for deteriorating security situation in the valley and they are arresting the youths and pro freedom leadership to hide their failures.
“In assembly, the so called leaders are giving an impression that they are well wishers of the people. But on the ground, they are giving directives to police and other agencies to arrest youths, impose curfews and indulge in other anti people measures so that people are afraid of supporting ongoing freedom movement,” he said.
Mirwaiz cautioned the state government to desist from such activities. Otherwise it will create hazardous consequences.
“People will never forget the miseries inflicted on them by the state government in the ongoing agitation. The entire valley has been held hostage and at times people are not even allowed to venture out of their homes. No family has been spared by the police who have unleashed a reign of terror in the valley,” he said.
Mirwaiz said the killings will not deter people from pursuing the cause of self determination. “We want to send message to the New Delhi that our struggle will continue till we attain our goal of self determination. People are being killed without any reason, but that will not stop us from pursuing our mission,” he said.
The Hurriyat (M) chairman said “Martyrs” have laid down their lives for the cause of freedom and it is the responsibility of the Hurriyat leadership to take it to its logical conclusion. “The authorities will never be able to defeat the freedom movement for which lakhs of sacrifices have been made,” he said.
Despite the restrictions imposed on Hurriyat leadership, Mirwaiz said, “people have continued their struggle and have conveyed to New Delhi that freedom movement will not be suppressed under any circumstances. People have remained and will continue to remain steadfast in this regard,” he said.
Mirwaiz said that Afzal Guru hanging will always be remembered by people of Kashmir. “It is the day when our son was martyred by the oppressive regime disregarding the basic human values. Afzal Guru’s hanging has exposed the Indian democracy before the whole world. It is a shame on them that they have not even returned the mortal remains of Guru to his family members,” he said.
“By sending Afzal to gallows they have send a message to the world that they will go to any extent due to the arrogance of power. People who are demanding the mortal remains of Guru are being meted out with bullets. They have broken all the records of the human rights violations and put a big question mark on their democracy,” Mirwaiz stated.
Asking people to follow the protest calendar of Mutahida Majlis-e-Masharawrat, he said the programme is framed taking into consideration the difficulties faced by people.
He also demanded release of all pro-freedom leaders and other youth who have been arrested on flimsy grounds.
