Kashmir received precipitation in the month of November this year. Last year, season’s first snowfall was experienced in December.
“There has been an early onset of winter in Kashmir this year. This season is colder by four degrees this year,” said Sonum Lotus, director meteorological department, Kashmir.
Giving reasons for the colder season, he said precipitation and snowfall in the early month of November has brought the chill.
“This year Kashmir received snowfall and rainfall earlier. This kept the atmosphere cold. The chilly winds blowing over the snowy regions brought cold wave,” said Sonum.
He added that it created cold and over caste conditions which kept valley cold.
“Last year, there was no snowfall in this season which kept Kashmir warmer.”
According to the meteorological department, weather shall remain dry and cold till November 25.
“We are not expecting any change in the weather. The cold wave shall continue.”
When asked if the coming months of winter will be colder than the previous year Sonum said, “It would be premature to predict anything but so far we have had early onset of winter and colder than last year.”
In 2012, Kashmir saw the coldest winter after 15 years. People are apprehensive about facing tough time in coming months. In view of the erratic power supply, locals are facing tremendous problems
“The old is becoming unbearable this time. November is actually autumn season but it feels like January,” said Shagufta, a house wife. She complained of highly erratic power supply in her area of Khanyar.
Students appearing for different examinations are facing hard time too due to inconsistent power supply.
“I have to wake up for studies early morning. There is no electricity. I am unable to use heating appliance while I study under candle light,” said Sadia, a second year student.
