Ayaz Akbar released on humanitarian grounds

SRINAGAR, Apr 4: State government today released Hurriyat Conference (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar from detention in view of the deteriorating health conditions of his wife, who was shifted to New Delhi today for medical treatment.
Akbar was arrested on February 9 after the hanging of Mohammad Afzal Guru.
Earlier Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani had sought Ayaz Akbar’s release on humanitarian grounds.
Reports said Akbar was released today after Tehsidar Srinagar Abdul Hameed granted him bail. “Soon after the bail, Akbar was shifted from Central Jail Srinagar to Parimpora Police station where he was handed over to his relatives.”
After the release, Ayaz Akbar said he would be flying to New Delhi tomorrow to accompany his wife who has already been flown there. “She has left for Delhi today and I will be leaving for Delhi tomorrow,” he said.
