Protests held: 18 school children injured in Mattan road accident

SRINAGAR, Aug 18: At least 18 school children were injured, two of them critically when a school bus in which they were traveling met with an accident near Roonipora, Mattan in Anantnag district.
Following the mishap, parents and relatives of the children held strong protest demonstrations against the school management for not providing better transport facilities to the students.
Later, police registered a case against school management. Reports said a school bus of Saint Peters School Anantnag while dropping the students back to their homes at 4 PM turned turtle near Roonipora Mattan. In the mishap, atleast 18 children were injured three of them critically.
The children were immediately rushed to the hospital where doctors referred three of the critically injured to various hospitals of Srinagar.
As the news about the school accident reached the parents and relatives of children, they rushed to the hospital. They held strong protests against the school management for its failure to provide better transport services to their wards.
"Despite charging thousands of rupees as transport fees the school management failed to provide better transport facilities to our wards. We approached the school management to keep available more buses for the transportation of our children but they never paid any heed to our pleas. Instead they kept on ferrying our children like cattle in few buses," said a parent Nisar Ahmad. An injured child, Faizan, said that they have to travel in overloaded bus. "This time despite the overload the cleaner of the bus was driving the bus when it met with an accident," he said.
The protesting parents demanded action against the school management for their carelessness in providing better transport facilities to their children. They also accused the management of schools of violating the Supreme Court orders with regard to transport facility to the children enrolled in their schools.
