3-day judicial conference concludes
Upholding rule of law should form an integral part of our daily functioning: Justice Chauhan
SRINAGAR, Oct 20: Describing the 3-day Judicial Conference as an intellectual feast, Justice T.S Thakur, Judge, Supreme Court of India, today said the subject of Rule of Law is well known and forms the part of our constitutional creed.

He said this subject has many dimensions, yet the manner in which it was addressed with such clarity and passion by eminent and distinguished judicial luminaries has made the conference a memorable one for all of us.

Justice T.S Thakur was addressing the Valedictory function of the 3rd Regional Judicial Conference (North Zone) on ‘Role of courts in upholding Rule of Law’ at SKICC here.

He said the scholarly lectures and speeches delivered during the Conference on the subject should be valued and published. He asked the Director National Judicial Academy to compile and publish these lectures for the benefit of large sections of people.

He said that the Conference is like an investment which should reap positive dividends and the same can be demonstrated through better commitment to Rule of Law and improved performance in quality of justice delivery.

Judge Supreme Court of India, Dr. Justice B.S. Chauhan in his address said that upholding Rule of Law should form an integral part of our daily functioning and exercise of power should ensure that Rule of Law prevails in practical sense.

He said citizens should have the confidence that their cases will be heard in even headed and honest fashion according to the Rule of Law and not as per the whims and fancies of those dispensing justice. He said common man feels empowered when rule of law prevails in a country and called upon Judges to perform a proactive role to fast track delivery of justice to the people.

Earlier, Chief Justice J&K High Court Justice M. M. Kumar said that such type of Conferences particularly in this region are rare, adding that such intellectual interactions are enriching for all especially for the students who are hungry for knowledge. He said the presence of distinguished Judges brought sanctity to the proceedings of the Conference, entrenched in the minds of every participant.

He said that the knowledge gained during the Conference should be put to practice while deciding cases, adding that the Conference has highlighted the very significant role that Courts play in upholding Rule of Law and the immense contribution that Judges have made and can make in the society. He hoped that Supreme Court and National Judicial Academy will give the State further opportunities to hold such Conferences in the future.

Justice Kumar also appreciated and thanked the State Administration for extensive cooperation in providing all necessary facilities for the successful conduct of the 3-day Conference. He also expressed his gratitude to the Committee of Judges for ensuring proper arrangements for the Conference.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir, hailed the efforts of the Chief Justice, Justice Mr. M. M. Kumar for holding the Judicial Conference and thanked Director, National Judicial Academy of India (Bhopal), Dr. (Prof) Balram K. Gupta for bringing together eminent personalities of the field. He said that the Conference has added to the knowledge and perceptions have widened on the concept of Rule of Law.
