Shut down, clashes on in Baramulla, Anantnag

SRINAGAR, Sep 22: A shut down was observed in Baramulla and Anantnag towns for the second consecutive day today amid clashes between protestors and police. However, life returned to normal in rest of Kashmir after yesterday’s undeclared curfew and a general strike against blasphemous film.
Shops and other business establishments remained closed at Baramulla and Anantnag today also. Same was the case with educational institutions. Government offices remained either closed or witnessed a thin attendance of employees.
Reports said some parts of Baramulla remained witnessed heavy stone pelting. The protestors were demanding immediate release of youth arrested by police.
Groups of youth assembled at Sabzi Mandi, government bus stand and Khanpora bus stand and chanted pro freedom slogans. They demanded immediate release of the arrested youth.
As police tried to disperse them, the youth resorted to stone pelting. This halted the traffic movement on roads. Police used force to disperse them.
Incidents of stone pelting and clashes were also reported from Main Chowk, Premgali and Khanpora.
Clashes between police and protestors were also witnessed at Janglat Mandi, Leesbal and Mattan Chowk in Anantnag, where a shut down was observed.
Meanwhile, life returned to normal in the valley today. Shops, other business establishments and educational institutions reopened after a break of one day.
Barring Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), all other separatist leaders were released. They were arrested or placed under house arrest yesterday.
