Census 2011 Data dissemination workshop Concludes

JAMMU, Mar 22: A one –day workshop “Data Dissemination of Houselisting Data Census 2011” organized by the Department of Economics, University of Jammu and the Census Directorate Jammu and Kashmir concluded here today .

This workshop was organized to make researchers in the Social Sciences aware of the nature and the volume of Data generated by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India so that this data could be used fruitfully in research.

Introducing the theme of the workshop, Professor Dipankar Sengupta briefly spoke on the scale of the effort undertaken by the Census Authorities and then elaborated on the data generated and how it could be used in research. Shri R.K. Bhagat IAS and Director, Census Directorate Jammu and Kashmir spoke in detail about the Census and the nature of data available.

C.S Sapru Jt Director also addressed the gathering of over a hundred researchers and faculty members where he also informed the gathering about the National Population Register and the potential it possessed about transforming people’s lives. The Chief Guest of the Workshop Prof Kulwant Kaur, Dean Research Studies, University of Jammu exhorted the scholars to use the available data and inprove the quality of their research.

The data which focused on Houselisting Data obtained from Jammu and Kashmir was presented by Samoora Khan and Farah Shah Jr Consultants from the office of the Jammu and Kashmir census. There was lively debate regarding the veracity of certain figures which were clarified by Shri, R.K. Bhagat, Shri C.S. Sapru and Professor Dipankar Sengupta.

The programme was coordinated by Dr Shallu Sehgal, Asst Professor Department of Economics while the others who attended the programme were Prof Jasbir Singh, Prof Falendra Sudan, Dr Prakash Antahal, Dr Virender Koundal, Dr Manoj Bhatt, Dr Vijay Shivgotra, Dr Parmil Kumar, Dr Suresh Babu, Dr Sapna Sangra , Dr Devinder Singh and Nimrat Kour, Statistical Investigator of the census office as well as research scholars from the Social Sciences, Statistics and Commerce.
