SRINAGAR, Oct 4: “We are being ridiculed for genuine arrests and if we arrest bikers for breaking rules, they will get more chance to mock us,” chief minister Omar Abdullah said in legislative council Friday.
Responding to a supplementary question by MLC Rafiq Shah whether the government intends to arrest youth riding two wheelers without helmets, the chief minister said that the step is uncalled for and will invite criticism.
“We shall be ridiculed and besides there will be no place in our jails.”
The question was originally put forth by MLC Ghulam Nahi Mongas during the question hour who asked about the steps being taken by the government to check traffic rule violators.
Chief minister appealed to the parents and youth to show responsible behaviour and follow traffic norms.
“The state does share a huge responsibility but the basic responsibility is that of parents and youth. Parents must not allow their children to go out without helmets.”
“There is a concept here that wearing helmet is cowardly. If you are wearing helmet you are not doing an obligation on us. You are doing it for your safety.”
Omar stressed the government will try its best to act against such violators.
Government revealed that 59391 challans were made against the violators riding two wheelers without helmets while 350 motors bikes have been seized. Traffic campaign, seminars and debates are being organised to create awareness amongst the youth about traffic rule are being organised, the government stated.
