SRINAGAR, Sep 30: Expressing serious concern over what she called unabated civil killings taking place in the state, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti Monday said that Kashmiris have become orphan in absence of an effective government.
Participating in obituary reference made in the Legislative Assembly on inaugural day of its seven day long autumn session, Mehbooba said the government in Jammu and Kashmir has become so helpless that justice has become causality. “The killings that took place in Samba Kathua attacks echoed in US and UN General Assembly Session but there seems to be no mechanism in place to deliver justice to the families who loose their near and dear ones day in and day out.”
She said the last two decades in Kashmir have witnessed a bloodshed which still continues but the victim families are being left high and dry for want of justice. “In this kind of situation, I don’t think people have any expectations left with this august House. It is ironic that the state government has always justified the civilian killings since it took over. In 2010 the chief minister is on record saying that any youth pelting stone on CRPF bunker will be committing suicide. This government again justified killing at Shopian saying that fourth one killed at Gagran was militant. Then the authorities said that the other three killed were civilians but justified their death saying that they were on excursion with some Bihari labourer.”
She said the Kishtwar incident echoed in Parliament but when the two civilians were killed at Markundal in Bandipora district, the state government issued a statement and closed the chapter. “Then Gool killings took place, government came up with a claim that the local Imam had incited the people triggering the violence there,” she said.
Referring to demands for return of body of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, the PDP chief said that despite voices raised for the body nothing happened. “IN 2010 people were compelled to open their shops and resume their normal life without prosecuting anyone from the security forces or police who had killed 120 people. Similarly, the people in Shopian were again compelled to open their shops after 22 days of strike and curfew without shifting the Gagran CRPF camp and prosecuting the CRPF personnel. You gave plum postings to the police officers who killed people in Anantnag in 2010.
Referring to controversial remarks made by former army chief Gen V K Singh, Mehbooba said her party wants a full fledged debate over the issue. “I don’t know which programmes are being run under Sadhbhawana and various Bhavnas. There should be threadbare debate over the allegations leveled by V K Singh as has put a question mark on the credibility of every politician in Jammu and Kashmir,” she said
