Geelani, Shabir arrested

SRINAGAR, Aug 10: Seniors separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Shabir Ahmad Shah were arrested here and Kulgam respectively today.
Javid Ahmad Mir was also arrested alongwith Shabir at Kulgam along with dozens others when they were moving towards a mosque for offering Friday prayers. They were also scheduled to address a public meeting there.
Geelani, who was under house arrest, was arrested when he moved out to offer congregation Friday prayers.
Giving details, Ayaz Akbar, spokesman of Hurriyat Conference (G), said the leader left for the mosque, but was arrested by police.
“The policemen followed him up to the Airport road where they stopped and arrested him,” he said, adding that there was no call for any programme.
“He (Geelani) was simply going to the local Masjid for Namaz,” Ayaz said.
Hurriyat (G) chairman was taken to the Humhama police station, and he was still in custody till last reports came.
Geelani was replaced under house arrest on Monday when he was to host an Iftar party here. The police, however, refuted that his movement was restricted.
