5 workers injured in Nashri mystery shootout
DODA, Feb 2: Five workers of Leighten Welspon Company were injured, one of them critically, when some unidentified persons fire upon them last night at Nashri.

These workers were sitting on strike-cum-dharna for the last two days in support of their demands against the management.

However, police has registered an FIR against unidentified persons for attack on striking workers at Nashri and for creating hurdles in smooth construction work of Nashri-Chenani tunnel at Police Station Batote.

The condition of one of the workers was stated to be critical who was later shifted to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital Jammu for treatment.

The striking workers, who have been sitting on dharna for the last two days blamed that Batote police was shielding the assailants who according to them have fired upon agitating workers at work site at Nashri last night.

While addressing the gathering, the workers claimed that five persons were injured in the incident and the one critically injured has been referred to Government Medical College hospital, Jammu. They alleged that despite producing concrete evidence and giving the names of attackers, the police was expressing its helplessness in taking any action against them.

As per eyewitness, the agitating workers who had been sitting on dharna against the management of Leighten Welspon Company were fired upon and attacked with stones by a group of persons including women led by a Sarpanch, who was working as a contractor for the company, of the area.

However, District Development Commissioner, Ramban, Shabeer Ahmed Bhat has confirmed the incident and in this context, DDC has called a meeting of leaders of Nashri Workers Committee and elected village representatives on February 4 to sort out issue once for all.

Meanwhile, SP Ramban Anil Magotra said that situation is tense but under control.

Today also the workers carried out protest against the company management and suspended the work of tunnel project. They blamed the management for attack saying that assailants fired upon peacefully protesting workers at the behest of company management which is hell bent to sabotage their protest. The workers are fighting for their rights and company management on the other hand is showing dictatorial attitude.

It was only in the recent that a committee constituted by the deputy commissioner Udhampur had taken note of payment of inadequate wages to the workers employed by the company. The labour commissioner and central labour officers had not initiated any action against the company for these lapses, which have been pointed out by the committee.
