`Seek Rs 5 lakh compensation for firing, shelling victims’

NEW DELHI, Sept 5: Both the MPs from Jammu division Madan Lal Sharma and Chowdhary Lal Singh today called on Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Home Secretary Anil Goswami here today and took up issues of border firing, refugees, SSB and construction of concrete bunds at different places in Jammu region.
Both the MPs apprised the Home Minister and Home secretary about the fear and panic among the people residing on International Border and Line of Control (LoC) in Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch. He said that the houses near border were under great threat and requested the Home Minister and Home Secretary for taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety, security and livelihood of border people.
They also demanded enhancement in compensation to the victims of border firing and shelling at par with the victims of militancy in J&K as presently border victims were entitled for Rs 1 lakh and the militancy victim for Rs 5 lakhs. Both the MPs strongly voiced to end this discrimination.
They also demanded recruitment from border areas on priority basis with relaxation. The MPs also requested to increase rent of the land under army use and they rather suggested that army should acquire that land and provide suitable compensation to the people. MPs also strongly demanded the shifting of border fence to zero point.
The duo also raised and demanded early settlement of all pending issues of refugees of 1947, ’65, ’71 and from West Pakistan. They demanded that ownership rights should be given to all types of refugees and the government should go for one time settlement of refugees. They also demanded early absorption of the children of aged volunteers and adjustment of the young one in police and paramilitary as, they said, the SSB volunteers had done commendable job while fighting militancy.
Home Minister and Home Secretary assured them all possible support to address the issues raised by them.
