JAMMU, Aug 26: Alertness of locals averted a major tragedy helping the police to seize huge arms and explosives dump from the banks of Bai nullah flowing at Ghagwal between Samba and Kathua districts.
The arms and explosives were believed to have been dumped by the militants to carry out terror strikes years ago as these were in rusted condition.
Police, however, claimed that on a tip off, cops conducted search in Bai Nallah under the jurisdiction of Police Station Ghagwal about 11.45 AM today. Cops during searches achieved success in locating the hideout believed to be of militants. The arms and ammunition which were recovered from the bank of nallah included 6 wireless sets (5 in broken condition), 7 remote batteries, 5 Chinese Pistols, 4 launcher shells , 7 Set Antennas, 3 set dips, 2 loaded pistol magazines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) concealed in tiffin boxes and Pistol rounds 200 (weight ¾ Kg) in rusted condition.
Locals claimed that the arms and explosives were dumped on the banks of the nullah, nearly 500 meters downstream from the railway bridge. Identifying the person who led to the discovery of seized dump as Subash Kumar, sources said that he was posted as SPO in a local VDC. Last night, while moving in the area, he noticed a portion of wireless set having come out from under the earth near the bank of Bai nallah. He immediately informed the police who cordoned.
In the morning, on digging of the earth, police found a polythene bag containing the arms, ammunition and explosives dump. The bomb disposal squad was immediately called and the IEDs were defused on the spot. The dump came over the ground following erosion of soil due to torrential rains in the area for past many days.
