Omicron crosses 10,000-mark, marginal drop in fresh cases

NEW DELHI, Jan 22: The Omicron variant of Covid-19 hit 20,050 cases in India on Saturday even as fresh Covid-19 cases continued to show a surge over 3 lakhs, though with a marginal decrease to 3,37,704, with 17.20% positivity rate and 488 deaths in the past 24 hours ending at 8 AM on Saturday.
The overall Covid-19 infections in the country reached 3.89 crore, though 3.63 crore of them have recovered, 2.42 lakh of them in 24 hours while the total deaths touched 4,88,884. The active caseload further shot up to 21,13,465, which is 5.43% of the total infections.
Maharashtra topped with the highest 52 deaths in the past 24 hours, followed by 38 in Delhi, 35 in West Bengal, 33 each in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and 15 in Rajasthan. Kerala also reported 73 earlier deaths taken into account.
The vaccination so far done recorded 161.16 crore administered the vaccine doses, 69.49 lakh of them in the past one day, whereas the tally of those tested for the virus reached 71.34 crore.
