EC refuses registration of Punjab farmers' body

NEW DELHI, Jan 22: The Election Commission has faulted many objections in the application by the Sanyukt Samaj Morcha, a farmers' new body that has entered into the Assembly elections in Punjab, asking its President Balbir Singh Rajewal to resubmit the application after removing all objections.
Its January 13 letter refers to six major objections which will require a lot of paperwork, which the Morcha may not be able to complete in 29 days before the polls on February 20. Rajewal has already announced 30 candidates, but some of them belonging to the left parties may contemplate th seek election on their symbols instead of waiting for Morcha's registration.
If not registered, the Morcha cannot claim a common symbol to contest the elections.
The EC has already allotted the common symbols to many parties that entered the fray late in Punjab, including hockey and ball allotted to former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh's Punjab Lok Congress Party.
The common symbols allotted to other parties to field candidates for all 117 seats in Punjab are: Telephone to Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt), Hand cart to Punjab Kisan Dal, Helicopter to Samajik Sangharsh PartyTV remote to Rashtriya Lokneeti Party, Fountain to Satya Shikhar Party, which is also contesting from Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, black-board to Bahujan Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samta Party, Well to Mishan Ekta Party Gas cylinder to Sam Bhalai Morcha, laptop to Shaktimaan Samaj Party, and a road roller to Loktantrik Rashtravadi Party, which is allotted the same also in Uttarakhand and Throwing a javelin in Uttar Pradesh.
