Strike, protest demonstrations at Chattabal

SRINAGAR, Aug 25: A strike was observed at Chattabal area here today after the body of a local youth was recovered from river Jehlum.
The local people alleged that the deceased, of Farooq Azam Khan son of Abdul Qayoom of Patlipora, Chattabal, was murdered and his body thrown into the river. His body was recovered from the river near Shalteng. Some protest demonstrators also resorted to stone pelting.
A police spokesman said Police Station Parimpora fished out the body of Farooq this morning.
“He was missing since August 22 from Regal Chowk, Srinagar, where he was working as a salesman in a computer shop. A missing report was lodged by his brother in police station Kothibagh on August 23,” he said and added postmortem of the body was conducted in the hospital.
“There was no visible mark of torture or violence found on the body. The body was later handed over to his legal heirs for last rites,” the spokesman said.
Farooq’s brother, Nasir said the deceased went missing after he left his shop on the evening of August 22. He added that on the evening of August 23, he did talk to his brother on mobile phone and the phone suddenly got switched off. Nasir said his brother was healthy and there was no reason for him to commit suicide. Farooq was arrested by police in 2009 on charges of stone pelting and later released. Nasir stated that a court had issued warrant against him some days back.
As Farooq body was brought to Chattabal, a strike was observed there. Demonstrations were also held. The protestors raised pro-freedom and pro-Islamic slogans. His body was later buried in his ancestral graveyard with large number of people taking part in his funeral.
