Mullaperiyar Dam: False campaign by Kerala, TN govt tells SC

NEW DELHI, Oct 27: The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that Kerala government has built up a false narrative on the 150-year old Mullaperiyar Dam as if Kerala was on the verge of submersion due to release of its water.

Its senior advocate Shekhar Naphade asserted that a concerted campaign is going on in Kerala against the dam and its safety. The British-era dam is located in Kerala but managed by Tamil Nadu.He also said the rains in Kerala have abated and so better to adjourn the hearing after the Diwali vacation.

In an earlier hearing on Monday, the Court had referred the matter to an expert committee in vogue because of a Supreme Court direction. Kerala government has sought the relief as granted by the Apex Court in 2018 to limit the water level in the dam at 139 feet in view of the floods.

A Bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and C T Ravikumar adjourned the matter for Thursday at 2 PM on the Kerala government wanted to file a written note on the expert committee's adverse report against it.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told the court that the expert committee has suggested that no change in water level is required and water level can be allowed to reach the 142 feet as the maximum limit fixed by the Supreme Court in 2014.

On the safety of the dam, the court wanted to know if the findings from 2006 hold good even today. "This was observed during 2006. Now we are on 2021. Is the threat level same/ has the committee examined this or not," the Court asked.
