Woman’s family torch her in-laws house, husband, family members arrested

ANANTNAG, Apr 10: A woman on Saturday ended her life by hanging herself in her home after allegedly facing domestic violence by her in-laws including her husband in Moominabad area of Anantnag. Following her suicide, her family and relatives (maternal) torched the house of her in-laws.
Following the incident has arrested both the husband of the woman and some of her maternal family members who set the house on fire and registered cases against them.
A woman (name withheld) from ChawalgamKulgam was married for over five years was found hanging in her room this morning. As soon as the news about her hanging spread through social media, locals said, scores of her maternal family nembers and relatives reached the spot and in a fit of rage set the house of her in-laws on fire after spraying it with kerosene and petrol. They alleged that their daughter was forced to commit suicide by her in-laws and husband.
Eyewitnesses said that the angry family members of the woman turned so violent that they did not even allow the people to douse the flames.
"Even police could not control the angry family members of the woman for sometime. Police had to make lot of efforts to control the situation," said an eyewitness.
Police later arrested not only the husband of the deceased woman but also those who set the house on fire.
A police official confirmed the arrest of the husband of the woman and her other maternal relatives for torching the house.
"We are investigating the matter further as to what forced the woman to take this extreme step," police official said.
Later relatives of the woman held protest demonstration in Kulgam demanding punishment to her in-laws who, according to them, forced her to end life.
They alleged that her husband and his family started committing violence on her only few months after the marriage.
One of her relatives alleged that since the deceased had no child, her in-laws were taunting her for the same.
"They were subjecting her to mental torture every time. They had made her life virtual hell," he alleged.
The husband of the deceased woman, according to her relatives had one child from the first wife whom he had divorced several years ago.
Pertinently, a woman from Aishmuqam area of the district a couple of weeks was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws in Akura village of Mattan. She later lost the battle for life a week later.
