India crosses one lakh mark

NEW DELHI, April 5: India on Monday reported 1,03,558 fresh Covid-19 cases, the highest single-day spike since the outbreak, pushing the overall tally t 1,25,89,067, according to the latest data released by the Health Ministry. India's earlier peak of 97,894 infections was reported on September 17 last year.
The country's death toll rose to 1,65,101, with 478 fatalities in the past 24 hours, show the data updated at 8 am. Maharashtra accounted for 222, followed by Punjab 51, Uttar Pradesh 31 and Delhi 21.
The active Covid-19 cases further increased to 7,41,830, which is 5.89% of the total 1,25,89,067 infections recorded in the country. It were the lowest at 1,35,926 on February 12 at the rate of 1.25% of the total infections.
India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.
It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.
According to the ICMR, 24,90,19,657 samples have been tested up to April 4 with 8,93,749 samples being tested on Sunday. A total of 7.91 crore people have been vaccinated in India, 16.38 lakh of them in the last 24 hours.
The global tally of coronavirus cases is no better. It stands at 13,18,97,284. While 10,61,83,383 have recovered, 1,28,65,513 have lost their lives. Meanwhile, the US continues to be the worst-hit country with 3,14,20,327 cases.
