Anti-Macron protests rock Kashmir, Kargil

SRINAGAR, Oct 30: Angry protests erupted in Srinagar, Anantnag and Kargil district of Ladakh today over the remarks of French President Emmanuel Macron allegedly against Islam.
One protest was staged in Batamaloo where protestors, led by Batamaloo Traders Association,appeared with banners protesting against “blasphemy” and French President. Another protest was staged in Nawakadal.
A similar protest was held in Kargil district today where people took to streets and raised anti-France slogans.
Macron in his speech recently had said that Islam is a religion which is experiencing a “crisis” today, all over the world”. There was a need to “free Islam in France from foreign influences”, the president had said, outlining plans to end a system allowing Imams to train overseas, reduce homeschooling, and take control of religious funding.
According to news agency GNS, similar protests with people assembling in large numbers was witnessed in Anantnag. It said that the Id-Milad-un-Nabi congregation turned into a protest with participants, thousands in number, shouted pro-Islam and anti-France slogans.
Starting from the central mosque in Anantnag, Jamia Masjid, the procession marching through the streets of Anantnag township culminated at the martyrs graveyard of the township, where various scholars shed light on the life of the last messenger of Islam, the GNS said.
Addressing the gathering here, Qazi Ahmed Yasir, the chairman of Ummat e Islami Jammu Kashmir said that it is time for people to stop hurting the religious sensitivities of Muslims worldwide.
He said that it is time for Muslims globally to rise above sectarian differences and unite for a common goal. “In Kashmir too, Muslims need to leave behind their differences and unite, these divisions have cost us the most, We cannot afford divisions anymore.”
