SRINAGAR, Aug 9: The outbreak of gastroenteritis in Bulbul Nowgam and Brakpora areas of Anantnag is singing alarm bells in the health department with dozens of more people hospitalized today after being taken ill. The toll of the people infected so far with the water borne disease has risen to
nearly 300.
Locals said that the disease is engulfing the entire area and the health authorities have failed to control the situation.
Doctors at Primary Health centre (PHC) Brakpora yesterday had put the number of people infected at 250 but had claimed that the situation was well under control. "We have treated at least 250 persons who complained of vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain," Dr Nasir Nasir
posted at the health centre had told Kashmir Times yesterday.
He also had said that the consumption of contaminated water was the only reason for the outbreak of the disease. Locals, however, discrediting the claims of locals today said that the situation continues to be grim with more and more people getting infected. "The water borne
disease seems to have engulfed the whole village. You will see the people being administered glucose at private medical shops. Almost all the families have been affected. The health authorities have failed to control the situation," said Sarpanch of the village, Riyaz Ahmad
Ahangar.
He said that a team of doctors had visited the village yesterday and distributed some tablets among the people and left. "You come here and see if the situation is under control or getting
worse," Ahangar said. He said that the PHE authorities who are responsible for the outbreak of the disease in the area by supplying filthy water also did not bother to visit the village. "Since the
disease hit the village five days back but irony is that none of the PHE officials bothered to visit the area to ensure the water supplied to the villagers is at least purified through chlorination," Sarpanch said.
