Family alleges killing by security men, cops deny

SRINAGAR, July 1: A paramilitary CRPF trooper was killed and three other security personnel injured in a militant attack in Sopore this morning.
A civilian was also killed in the incident. His family alleged that he was brought down from his vehicle by the security men and shot dead in cold blood. However, police and security officials denied the allegation.
The slain civilian, a contractor by profession has been identified as Bashir Ahmad Khan of HMT on the outskirts of Srinagar. He was going to Sopore for some work and his three-year-old grandson was accompanying him.
The family members of the slain civilian alleged that CRPF troopers brought him down from the vehicle and fired upon him, killing him on the spot, a charge denied by the CRPF, who said he was killed in a militant attack.
Family of Bashir said he was killed by the CRPF personnel to avenge the killing of their colleague by militants.
Official reports suggested that militants hiding in a mosque carried out an attack on CRPF patrolling party at around 8.45 AM, leaving four personnel wounded, of whom one succumbed to injuries in the hospital. A civilian from HMT Srinagar accompanying his three-year-old grandson also lost his life in the deadly shootout.
Officials said the militants chose the attic of the mosque where they were hiding to carry out the attack on the CRPF patrolling party.
They said, “militants opened indiscriminate firing on the patrolling party which was accordingly retailed, but the militants managed to flee from the scene.” They said the injured personnel were immediately evacuated to Army’s 92 Base Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses said the traffic on Srinagar-Baramulla road halted while people jumped out of the vehicles to save themselves.
They also said the bullet riddled body of the slain civilian was lying on the road and his toddler grandson was crying sitting over his body. The photos and videos of the minor sitting on the body of his grandfather went viral on social media with netizens raising queries as to who clicked the pictures if the firing was going on from both sides.
CRPF, in a brief statement, said “as the troopers were alighting from the vehicles to occupy their respective spots of deployment, militants hiding in the attic of a nearby mosque started firing indiscriminately on the troops, resulting in injuries to 4 CRPF personnel”.
The injured troopers were identified as Constable Bhoya Rajesh, Head Constable Deep Chand Verma, Constable Deepak Patil and Constable Nilesh Patil while head Constable Deep Patil later succumbed to his injuries.
As soon as the shootout took place, government forces carried out an intensive search operation in the vicinity to nab the assailants while security was beefed up in the area.
