Farmers in Handwara protest against dredging contracts

HANDWARA, Jun 25 (Agencies): The farmers of Several villages of Baikaker and adjoining villages on Thursday held a strong protest against the Geology & Mining Department in north Kashmir’s Handwara town.
According to news gathering agency, KNS, several farmers assembled in Bakiaker Handwara and staged a protest demonstration against the G&M Department and demanded cancellation of e-tendering.
The protesting farmers said the area is facing acute shortage of irrigation water due to continuous dredging in nearby Nallah by some blue-eyed persons. They said farmers came to know that Government is willing to give e-tendering of Nallah which might lead the farmers into trouble.
Terming the e-tendering of Nallah “unacceptable”, farmers demand immediate withdrawal of e-tendering so that farmers will get a sigh of relief.
Ghulam Rasool, a farmer said that the land measuring approximately 1600 kanals are dependent on the irrigation water and local farmer after strenuous efforts ensured waters for their fields after three years.
He added the dredging of Nallah will deprive farmers from livelihood and warned all farmers will prefer to give up their lives if their livelihood is snatched forcibly.
